The sequel to the key

The best way to end

It’s been three years since she last saw him. But she never gave up hope still waiting for him faithfully hoping for his return while touching the necklace she holds dear. No could compare to him no matter whom. It still hurts everyday as she waited by the phone and in front of the computer. Yet when in front of people she acted as if she was fine, as if nothing was hurting her. The only person who actually knew how she felt was her best friend Beth. Beth tried her best to cheer Samantha up but nothing worked. Samantha would always do her best smile and laugh trying to satisfy Beth’s attempt but Beth always knew they were fake. By looking into Samantha’s eyes, Beth could see the emptiness in her eyes. The only place Samantha could not hide her feelings.

There Samantha was at her favourite coffee shop, drinking a delicious cup of blank coffee. She took a sip of it, hoping it would sooth her pain but it couldn’t this time. The coffee tasted so plain and it didn’t have that pick me up affect in the morning. She thought maybe she had too much coffee but that would be impossible. She loved coffee more than anything. She was lost in her thoughts, not knowing he was right besides her holding a white lily.

"I'm right here Samantha..." She turned to face him only to sigh.

"You must be another one of my imagination." She turned away, looking at her cup of black coffee. Adam wanted to tell her he was real but he could not, once he saw that sad smile on her face. "If it were really you I would tell you how much I missed you and long for your company. How I waited to hear from you to only receive nothing. But for some reason I still love you. Not love you like brothers and sisters but as a lover." She took a deep breath and slowly let it out. "The thing I regret most is not saying it before you left." She bowed down her head till her bangs fell in front of her face, hiding the fact her eyes were teary. "However I can't change the past, I know that but I keep hoping...” She sobbed still holding on to the handle of the cup.

"Samantha I am really here..." Adam put his hand on hers, smiling. Once she felt his touch she knew it was really him, not just her imagination.

"So your really here..." She sobbed and started to cry.

"Please don't cry...Because the last time I saw you cry was at dad's funeral. You rarely ever cry..." He took her hand and put the white lily in it, smiling. "I know you always liked this flower."

"Sadly I hate getting flowers as a present." Samantha sighed and chuckled, looking at Adam.

"That's why I always have back up plan." Adam took out a black hard cover book and a pen, both having a white lily design on it. "So I brought something that will make you happy. Since you always liked to write, I decided to buy you a book and pen. I know it might be a boring thing to get but since it's you. I think it's the best because now every time you write, you will think of me." He smiled and looked at Samantha. "I hope you like it." He gave it to Samantha who accepted it happily.

"I couldn't think of anything better..." She held the book to her chest, hugging it tightly. She wiped away the tears. "Don't think you’re out of trouble for leaving me without any contact. I want an explanation." Samantha said still slightly angry at him, glaring.

"Look at the first page of the book" Adam pointed at the book which Samantha was holding. She opened the book, slightly curious of what she was about to see.

There was 3 words written on the first page, those word were "I love you" with Adam's signature beneath it. Samantha was about to say something before Adam stopped her.

"Turn to the next page." Samantha gave a nod and did as she was told.

I'm sorry for leaving you for such a long time. I took too long to know whether what I felt was real or not. Maybe by the time you read this you must very angry at me for doing it but I wanted to be sure. During the whole time away from you, I couldn't think of anyone else even the beautiful girls there seemed plain to my eyes. I don't know if you feel the same way but here I am, looking at you with a smile in front of my face. Hoping for the feeling to be replied with the same zeal...” She closed the book and took a deep breath, closing her eyes.

"Will that do for you to forgive me?" Adam said softly, smiling at Samantha. She opened her eyes and saw the smile on his face but she also saw the hesitation in his eyes. He was scared, she would not accept him.

Samantha smiled at him, putting her hand on his cheek. "You already know what I feel about you..." She punched him on the shoulder softly. "I guess I can forgive you for now." She kissed him on the cheek and pinched his cheek. "That's for being sweet."-

Suddenly Adam’s phone rang and it was Mathew, who was waiting for them to come back. “Hi Mathew. What’s up?”

“You know what’s up. You were suppose to be here an hour ago. Where are you?” Mathew said furious.

“I am at the coffee shop with Samantha.” Adam said calmly as if he had not done anything wrong.

“Did you finally confess to her?” Mark said with a calm voice . “So did you?” Adam was blushing too embarrass to say it. “You did then…”

“How did you know?” Adam was surprise, he did not expect Mathew to be a mind reader.

“Just had a feeling that you did…” Mathew smiled, glad to hear they will at last be together. “Anyway mom’s currently waiting for you to get Samantha there as soon as possible. Mom wants to introduce Samantha to Anthony Thomson.”

“You got to be kidding me.” Adam was fuming with jealousy when he remembers that his mother was about to engage Samantha to Anthony if Samantha agrees to do so.

“You can’t tell mom that you both are an item till after the party. I don’t plan on being responsible if mom faints.” Mathew sighed and hanged up after saying “I got to go, mom is going crazy being worried about you guys. No running away and say hi to Samantha for me.”

”Was it Mathew? Why didn’t give it to me? I haven’t talked to him for so long. He’s been too busy with work to talk to me.” Samantha made a sad face so Adam decided to cheer her up.

“Come on. I have a place that much better than talking to Mathew.” Adam took her hand and pulled her up.

“Where is it?” Samantha asked, picking up the gifts that Adam gave putting it into her bag.

“It’s a surprise.” Adam smiled mischievously, entwining their hands together after she slings her bag to her shoulder. “I already bought it.”

Samantha knew what he meant, smiling. “You always know what I need.”

“It’s a talent.” He grinned, when they arrived at the car Adam let go of Samantha’s hand reluctantly.

In the car

“Here’s the coffee. I bought dry cappuccino since you look really tired and really need a pick me up.” Adam gave it to her willingly without any tricks. Of course Samantha found it strange.

“No tricks, no teasing and not even a small prank. Are you sure you’re Adam?” Samantha said teasing him.

Adam started the car and answered “I only teased you to get your attention seeing that I already did, why take the trouble.” He put on his sunglasses and smirked. “I also don’t plan on losing you with my childish act.”

“I actually like your teasing.” Samantha said quietly, hoping Adam would not hear her.

“I guess I have to do it later at home.” He answered smiling. Samantha smiled back, leaning her head on his shoulder falling asleep. Luckily, Adam caught the coffee before it spilled. “Looks like mom doesn’t have to drug you to sleep again…” He laughed softly, before kissing her forehead.

“I knew it…” She mumbled before going back to sleep.

They finally arrived there after 40 minutes of driving, Adam looked out the window and took a deep breath before turning his attention to Samantha. “We’re here, Samantha.” He shook her shoulder, waking her out of her slumber.

“So where are we?” She yawned, closing her mouth with her hand. “You didn’t really explain before we left.” She went out of the car and stretched out her arms, not knowing about the beautiful scene in front of her.

“We stopped by at my favourite place. It is the place I go to when I am confuse or sad. It always calms me down, like coffee to you.”

Samantha opened her eyes and understood why Adam would feel calm looking at such a mesmerizing view. “Wow.”

“You’re speechless.” Adam smiled, leaning on the car.

”How can I, not notice this?” Samantha walked till she was stopped by the highway barrier.

“Because you’re usually asleep…” Adam whispered to her ear, wrapping his arms around her.

“Whose fault would that be?”

“Depends on who is picking you up.” Adam chuckled while Samantha rests her head on his shoulder. He heard her whisper jerk but decided to ignore it and just enjoy the scenery with his loved one. Then the alarm on his watch rang so it was time to go. “Mom and Mathew are waiting for at home since 2 hours ago. I didn’t want to tell you because I wanted you all for myself.”

“It’s okay. Let’s go then Adam.” Samantha tried to get out of the hug but Adam would not let her go. “What’s wrong?”

“We can’t tell anyone that you and I are together because I don’t think you want mom to faint on your birthday tomorrow.” Samantha gave a nod and smiled. “Are you sure?” Samantha gave another nod, kissing him on the cheek. He let her go and they both went back into the car.

The whole way they kept their hand together knowing when they reach there, they have to let go no matter what. Once they arrived, Adam and Samantha let their hands go reluctantly. “Don’t worry, after your birthday party everyone will know you are mine.”

“Possessive much...” Samantha went out of the car, smirking.

“It comes with the territory.” Adam smiled.

“Samantha, you’re finally here.” Their mother came hugging Samantha. “I was so worried.”

“I’m fine mom.” Samantha hugged her back. Mathew came with a hand in his pockets, waving and smiling. Beth was right beside him waving to them too. Samantha waved back, then she remembered something. “Mom I have to give Beth a tour of the house which I had forgotten to do for the past three years.”

“It’s okay.” Their mom let Samantha go letting her go with Beth. “Adam I need your help on something, leaving.” Adam gave a nod and followed their mom. She wanted Mathew to follow but it seemed Mathew had other plans. Samantha gave Beth a tour of her parents place, stopping at the swimming pool because she saw Drake swimming in it. "Drake!" He looked around and finally saw her. He swam to her.

"So you finally arrived." He smirked and got out of the pool only wearing swimming trunks. He walked to the bench and took a towel, drying himself.

"Do you know where my brother is?" She asked him looking at him who had his back towards her.

"Which one is it, Adam or Mathew?" Drake asked turning to face her, drying his hair. He looked at the girl beside Samantha and smirked.

"Mathew. I haven’t seen him anywhere around the house.” She looked a bit sad saying it.

"I'll only answer if you tell me who is she?" He whispered to Samantha's ear, pointing at Beth. Samantha glared at him and protectively hugged Beth who had no idea what's going on except that Drake had a nice body.

"She's my best friend Beth and you are not allowed anywhere near her. She's mine." Beth rolled her eyes and let it be too lazy to have anything to do with it.

"Never knew you were into girls." He chuckled and smirked. Samantha gave him a death glare threatening him. "Alright, your brother is currently out busy preparing something. He'll come back later in the evening so if you want to see him you have to wait. Drake took his shirt and suddenly asked Samantha “Why do you hate me so much?"

"I don't hate you just the fact you're a playboy makes me dislike you. The only reason I can't make you go away is because you're Mathew's best friend." He made a sad smile on his face for a split second, putting on his shirt. Beth saw it and tugged Samantha's shirt and whispered something to her ear. Samantha shook her head but Beth stare made her bow down to Beth wish. "I'm sorry, Drake..." She looked down to her shoes feeling guilty. She continued "You're not a bad person. I'm just jealous you get to spend more time with big bro." She sulked having to tell the truth.

Drake made a small smile and patted her softly on the head. "It's alright. Besides you look cute when you are angry." He teased leaving her and Beth alone. She glared at him from the back while she tried to control herself from beating him up.

Beth simply snickered looking at how childish they were acting. "Anyway Samantha you didn't tell me Drake had a hot body. You only told me he was a jerk."

"He has a hot body!? No! My brother Mathew has a better body than that and he is at least a million times nicer." Samantha explained to Beth with such zeal.

"On the other hand right now we have to go. You're mom told me to tell you to meet her at the living room at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. It's already 2.30 p.m. We have to hurry and get you dressed." Beth pulled Samantha at the wrist to her house.

"Why?" Samantha asked trying to keep up with Beth.

"Too long to explain just go with the flow." Beth grinned and pulled Samantha harder almost making her fall. After Beth got Samantha all dressed up Beth sent her down the stairs to the living room. Samantha wasn't expecting to see visitors especially that guy she always seen at the coffee shop. Her mom greeted her, smiling sweetly. Samantha came right on time. "Samantha I'm please to introduce you to, Mr. And Mrs. Thomson." She shook their hands and smiled, introducing herself to them politely. “Not forgetting their charming son, Anthony."

"Nice to meet you somewhere else rather than the coffee shop Samantha." He smiled at Samantha giving her a kiss on the hand.

Samantha tried to control herself from pulling her hand away not wanting to be rude to the visitors. "Nice to meet you too, Anthony." She gave him a polite smile which was quite a pain for her to do.

"You can just call me Tony." He smiled charmingly. Samantha gave him a nod and pulled her hand slightly so he would get the message. Sadly he did the opposite he entwined their hands together and pulled her to his parents. He whispered something to their ears and they gave a nod to Samantha's mother. Samantha was clueless of what's going on.

Meanwhile the person looking from upstairs was controlling himself from snapping the boys head into half. He decided to leave the house knowing it would be better for everyone if he left the house till mom's plan goes as plan. He took his car keys and went down the stair to the main door. His mom called him to come but he shook his head giving a no as a reply, leaving. Samantha knew something was wrong with Adam so she asked to be excused, following him until she was stopped by Beth. Samantha tugged her hand telling Beth to let go but she shook her head. Samantha simply snatched her hand away from Beth chasing after Adam. Adam didn't even notice Samantha following him. He just continued walking towards his car. Letting the rain soak his clothes, washing away the pain he felt. He didn't care the fact he was walking in the rain with nothing to stop the rain drops from falling to his face hiding the tears that were slipping from his eyes. Adam finally stopped for a while looking up to the sky closing his eyes clearing his mind listening only to the sound around him.

At last he notice someone was following him, he opened his eyes to see an umbrella. He slowly looked beside him to see Samantha holding the umbrella keeping him away from the rain. "Samantha?" He looked surprised and glad to see her.

"Adam let's go inside. It's raining. I don't want you to get a cold during my birthday party tomorrow." She smiled at him.

"How did you know?" He wondered, confuse of how Samantha found out.

"It's not hard to piece the puzzle together because it's quite obvious. Especially when she introduced me to the Thomson's and the big present in your room gave me the biggest hint ever." She snickered as Adam glared at her playfully.

"You can't stop yourself from going through my stuff can you." She shook her head and grins at him. She pulled his hand and guided him back the house.

"Let's get you dried and make a cup of hot tea for you with cookies to nibble on." He enjoyed her hand wrapped around his feeling grateful to have met such a caring person. The sun slowly reappears as the dark clouds are blown away giving the world once again the warmth of sunlight. However as every story a happy moment doesn't last that long because behind the scenes there is someone watching with jealousy glaring at one of them with hatred. The person looked away, smirking thinking about the devious plan the person had planned for the happy couple.

The next day

Samantha woke up to the sound of her mother calling her "Samantha dear wake up..." She said moving Samantha a bit trying to wake her up. Samantha woke up to her mother's call rubbing her eyes and looked at her mother droopily. Samantha looked so adorable making her mother want to just pinch her but she didn't. "It's time to wake up dear." She kissed her on the forehead and smiled at her lovingly. "It's your birthday today and you don't want to be late." She chuckled as Samantha yawned, giving a simple nod. She kissed Samantha on the cheek whispering "Happy 27th birthday Samantha." her mother stood up and walk out of the room. "Just so you know Ren is downstairs waiting for you." Her mother said as she was about to go out of the room.

Samantha's was surprise and yet very excited to see him again. She quickly got ready and hurried walking down the stairs. She looked around for Ren and saw Marie. "Marie have you seen my mother and Ren?" Marie gave a nod and showed Samantha the way. She finally led Samantha to the kitchen where Ren was sitting on a stool eating a cookie while talking to mom. Samantha thanked Marie and told her to meet her before the party. After that she quietly tip toed into the kitchen while her mother and Ren were too busy chit chatting to notice her. She sneaked from behind and hugged Ren who jumped from his seat. "So cute!" She squealed, hugged Ren even closer.

Ren patted her arm and looked at Samantha sighing. "You can't just say hi like a normal person." Her mother smiled seeing her daughter temperament.

"No" Samantha answered while Ren shook his head side to side in frustration, playfully. "I've missed you so much Ren." She kissed his cheek and smiled afterwards.

“I missed you too Samantha. How have you been doing?” Ren asked taking a bite of a cookie, smiling back at her.

“Fine if excluding the fact my mom wants to marry me off to some guy.” She sighed rolling her eyes.

“Hey. I was one of those guys remember.” He said sounding offended by her word.

“But you’re different. You are my best friend ever since kindergarden. I could never hate you.” She hugged him reassuringly and he patted her on the hand, knowing she meant every word she said.

“Samantha dear I can hear everything you have said.” Her mother said shaking her head side to side. Samantha only grinned at her mother before letting Ren go and sitting beside him, planning on also joining him for breakfast. Samantha’s mother left to finish a few unfinished business about the party.

Suddenly Beth yelled from upstairs “Samantha we have to get ready for the party.”

“Come on Ren. Let’s go see Beth. She would be glad to see you!” Samantha said pulling his hand, smiling cheerfully excited to finally let the two old lovers to meet. But a smile was not something that graced Ren’s face, it was a frown that looked so sad it made the joy in Samantha’s heart to disappear.

“What’s wrong Ren?” Samantha stopped and looked at him, concerned. He looked so sad and pitiful it was not like the usually calm Ren. Nothing could ruin his mood.

“I can’t see her. She is going to hate me…:” Ren answered, looking away.

“Look at me….” Samantha ordered him and he obliged reluctantly. She sat back down on the chair, looking into his eyes “She could never hate you… She missed you everyday. No one could make her happy like you, not even me. You’re the only one for her, her soul mate.”

“A soul mate won’t leave their loved one suddenly without saying goodbye.” He said spitefully as if he hated himself for doing it. . He pulled his hand away from Samantha not wanting anyone to touch him.

“Well mine did and he came back so don’t say that….. Please I am begging you to go a see her.” She took his hands and held it firmly. “She’ll be glad to see you. She might be angry at first but once she gets over it. She’ll be the happiest woman in the world.” She smiled trying to reassure him only to be interrupted by Adam who just came into the kitchen, leaning on the doorway.

“Who could your soul mate be Samantha?” Adam said sounding somewhat jealous.

“I wonder who left me 3 years without any contact even after promising he would Skype me everyday…” She said glaring at Adam who simply shrugged his shoulder.

“I don’t know anyone like that…” He answered, acting as if he was thinking really hard. Samantha rolled her eyes and ignored Adam, looking at Ren who was chuckling.

“I knew it…” Ren said before calming down, continue by saying “Maybe your right Samantha, I don’t her being angry at me for a while but being hated by her is something I can’t live with.” Ren said smiling at her. “She also looks cute when she angry.” Ren smirked.

“Now you seem like Drake….” Samantha shook her head side to side and sighed, disappointed of the result she got. “At least I got something rather than nothing….” She thought, smiling looking Ren. Adam patted Samantha’s head and smiled at her, as if congratulating her. Then he left to get ready for the party, taking a sandwich along as breakfast. “I guess this is what I get from liking him.” She sighed playfully before smiling. Adam was pleased to hear that Samantha thought he was her soul mate, because he did too.

“Samantha! Are you coming or not?!” Beth yelled sounding really angry.

“I’m coming!” Samantha replied pulling Ren along with her and this time Ren didn’t resist he simply followed her from behind willingly till they started to go up the stairs. Each step he took seemed harder than the one before because it reminded him of the mistakes he made. The reason why he should be with Beth but suddenly Samantha started talking about the good memories they had together. She was cheering him on because she knew Ren too well to let him to face it alone. “She always knows what I need…” Ren thought, smiling glad to have such a good friend.

When they finally reach the end of the stairs they saw Beth was talking to Drake, laughing and smiling. Ren was about to back away but Samantha was persistent. She wanted Beth to see Ren no matter what.

“Beth!” Samantha called out, hoping Beth would hear her and turn around. Then she did, turning her head to Samantha only to be surprise by Ren’s presence.

Beth slowly walked to Ren and put her hand on his cheek, looking into his eyes. She caressed it tenderly as if afraid she would lose him again with just a single touch.

“You’re really here…” She said as she leans her head on his shoulder. “You’re really here…” She said one last time before tears started to fall out of her eyes wetting Ren’s shoulder.

“I am here…” Ren whispered to her ear slowly putting his arms around Beth, pulling her into an embrace. He lifted her head and kissed her on the forehead, whispering words of comfort and asking forgiveness.

Samantha quietly went to Drake’s side and hit him on the shoulder. “That’s for almost ruining my plan. But it doesn’t really matter anymore because they can finally fill the emptiness in their hearts which had been long left open, that couldn’t be filled with anyone else.

“Never knew you were such a romantic person.” Drake said smirking.

Samantha shrugged her shoulder and smiled. “It comes with the job as a writer and a friend….” She took one last look before walking away leaving her friends to settle their past issues by their own. “Let’s go Drake. We should leave the two love birds alone.” Drake gave a nod and followed her. Samantha went to her room to get ready and stopped Drake just before he could enter her room. “This is as far as you can go.” She said putting her hand in front of his face stopping him. She was about to close the door when Drake suddenly stopped it by putting his hand on the door.

“If only Adam wasn’t in love with you, I would have taken you all for myself.” Drake said before taking his hand away, leaving with a smirk on his face. Because of Samantha’s reaction who was dumbfounded by what she heard before she notice he was only teasing her. She was about to punch him but he was already too far. She slammed the door and Drake heard it his mask fell. Anyone could see the pain in his eyes as he smirked but no one was there to see.

Meanwhile in Samantha’s room it wasn’t so cheerful too with Samantha feeling absolutely angry at Drake.

“How dare he trick me!” Samantha yelled, gripping her hand into a fist. All her yelling stopped once interrupted by her maid, who waiting by the side patiently till her patient snap.

“Sorry to interrupt your tantrum Miss Samantha but can you please calm down. We need to get you ready for the party.” Maria said sternly with Sarah beside her fidgeting.

“I’m sorry….” Samantha walked towards them, sitting on the chair in front of dressing table. “I just got really angry when Drake teased me.” Samantha said crossing her arms in front of her chest.

“Miss Samantha…” Maria said softly, combing Samantha’s hair gently. “Master Drake was simply expressing his discomfort in his own way. Sometimes the way he does it, may cause irritation to you but you need to think rationally Miss Samantha. Even when people joke about something there is always some truth in it.” Samantha wanted to protest but when she gave Maria’s words a chance to seep in, she reconsidered. She let her hands fall to her lap rather than stay on her chest, relaxing her shoulder.

“You’re right Maria…” Samantha said reluctantly, sighing. “You had always been smart. If only you could continue your studies even further. You wouldn’t have to be a maid.” Samantha looked sorry for Maria’s fate.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way being a maid in your family Miss Samantha is the best thing I could ever have. You’re family is neither arrogant nor evil in any way. Other people have worse fate than me. I at least get to meet an amazing family and be able to reunite with my old friend, you.” Maria pulled her hair into a pony tail tying it in place.

“Do you want to wear make up or not? Because I think we should keep it natural.” Maria asked telling Sarah to put the clothes on the bed.

“I don’t want to wear make up especially in the morning. Thanks for asking.” Samantha answered smiling. She wore white skinny jeans with a short green dress. “This is comfortable.”

”You’re going to need it because you will do a lot of walking today. “Maria left the room with Sarah bringing everything except the sneakers for her to wear. Samantha wore the sneakers and went downstairs to see Mathew waiting for her.

“I’ll be your date for the next 6 hours, Miss Samantha.” Mathew bowed, smiling.

“What?”

“You’re birthday will be tonight but for the next four hours I will be your date. I owe you this because I wasn’t there when Adam left, too busy with my work. Will you forgive me?” Mathew held his out hoping Samantha would take it. But Samantha had other plans, walking to Mathew and hugged him.

“Of course I will.” She let him go, smiling. “I can never be angry at my brother who is the best brother in the whole world, so let’s go.” Mathew smiled at his sister and they went out. They visited the places where they usually go as kids, to reminisce of the past when their dad was around.

“I couldn’t wish for a better date with my brother.” Samantha said with a cheerful smile on her face. The day was finished and they were about to go home. “I wish it would never end.”

“All things come to an end, it only depend on you how it will end.” Mathew patted her on the head softly. Samantha gave a nod, hugging the stuffed panda he got her. “When we get home, you’ll be a good little sister and get ready. I promise you it will be the best birthday you’ll ever have. Okay?”

“Okay, I will.” Samantha slowly doze a sleep on the way home. The last place they visited was an amusement park they went with their dad before his sickness took over his life. The bear Samantha loved so much was won by her dad in one of the park games there. Now she had another one she can cherish given by her brother, hopefully he will be able to stay and protect her longer than their father did.

“Samantha we’re home.” Samantha opened her eyes and saw they have arrived. She yawned and went out of the car. “I have to do a few errands to do. Don’t worry I be there at your birthday party I promise.”

“I know you will and thanks Mathew. You are the best brother in the whole universe.” Samantha closed the door and waved him good bye. Mathew drove off and suddenly Samantha got a text message, it was from Mathew. She read it out and smiled.

“You’re the best sister in the whole universe.” She chuckled and went into the house. Maria and Sarah got her ready for the party. This time she wore a stunning red dress with a mini black jacket and black cage heels. “I should get going. Maria and Sarah, thank you for making me look beautiful on my birthday.”

“You’re welcomed.” They both said packing their stuff, smiling.

“Maria and Sarah please join the party. I am giving both of you permission to take the day off.” Samantha pulled them away from their work and held their hands.

“I rather not, I have to help out with the party Miss Samantha. But I think Maria should go, it’s been a long time since she had a day off.” Sarah pulled her hand away, putting Maria’s hand instead. “You need the break.”

“I got the dress just for you.” Samantha pulled out one of her dresses and gave it to Maria. “I hope you don’t mind borrowing mine.”

“I don’t think I should…” Maria gave the dress back to Samantha, shaking her head.

“You should, just this once as a favour to me.” Samantha put the dress on to her bed and looked at Sarah. “I have to leave but Sarah, please get her ready for the party. There will be a man waiting for you at the stairs once you finish.” Samantha went out of her room and walked down the stairs. She looked around and saw no one till she heard Adam’s voice.

“Wow you’re actually here before me.” Adam said surprise, still trying to get his tie on.

“I guess I am the prince charming today and you’re the damsel in distress.” Samantha joked, snickering. “Here let me help you.” She took only one try to get in right, putting the tie into his tux. “There you go.”

“I see you’re wearing the necklace.” Adam pointed at the necklace which he had given her before he left.

“I never took it off. It was the only key to remind me you’re there in my heart.” Samantha touched the necklace and made a small smile.

“I promised you that after the party everyone will know that you’re mine but you look too beautiful. I don’t want anyone to take you away so Samantha will you marry me?” He bent to one of his knees, holding out a box. Adam opened it and it was a ring, a diamond ring.

Samantha was overwhelmed with joy when she heard him say that. “Yes I will…” She pulled him up and kissed him. “Mathew was right, this is the best birthday ever.”

“I am glad to hear that…” Mathew said softly, hiding behind the door of the main entrance.

“We should leave then, Mathew. Let them enjoy this moment.” Mathew held out his hand and she took it. “I can finally let go.” She whispered to herself, smiling.

Meanwhile Drake was meeting the girl of his dream when he knocked on the door of Samantha’s room, it was Maria. He fell in love with her at first sight and what a way to fall in love.

Adam and Samantha announce their engagement at the party. Their mother did not faint luckily, she was instead pleased to see her children all happy and excited. She gave her blessing willingly, wishing them the best in their future life together. It was a birthday to remember and shared by both of them till the day they both die.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

After the girl was sent into another room, Adeline went home and Maya stayed by her sister side just like what her sister did for her in past. The inspector came half an hour later because he got lost in the hospital.

“How is she doing?” The inspector asked Maya while he looked at the girl. Maya took a glance of her sister.

“She’s fine on the outside but not in her mind. The incident before just increase the trauma she had before. The doctors gave her sleeping pills and will check on her later again.” Maya softly pushed her sister’s hair away from her face. The inspector gave a small smile and leaned his back on the nearest wall.

“At least there is someone taking care of her. Anyway have you ever known a man named John Thomson?” The inspector looked at Maya and Maya took a while to think about it. Maya couldn’t think of anyone she knew named John Thomson. Maya shook her head and looked at the inspector peculiarly. “I’m sorry but it’s because this man had paid all of your sister’s hospital bill including buying a wheel chair. He said he was an acquaintance of your sister but all the evidence we have, shown no connection of him to her at all. We thought we could ask your sister for the answer but you can see why we can’t.” The inspector took a glance of the girl and looked at Maya again.

“Sorry to disappoint you but I haven’t seen or contacted my family for so long. I don’t really know who they have met these past few years. But inspector please don’t ask her when she’s still unstable I’m afraid it would make it worse.” Maya looked depressed while she thought of all those years she had missed from being with her family.

“I can’t make any promises but I’ll try on making it happen.” Maya gave a weak smile and the inspector accepted it as a thank you. The inspector took a chair and sat on it. “In the past did anyone you remember hated your family or even had a revenge with any of you?”
He looked even more serious after he finished asking.

“No, no one hated our family. We never really did anything bad. Mom and dad were always busy with their work and charity events. They even rarely come back home. We get to talk with each sometimes but usually when we follow to them to all the boring occasions. But that time it seemed as if everything was fine.” Maya held one of her sister’s hands and looked as if she was going to burst to tears.

“It seems as if most of your childhood had only sister if excluding the butlers and maids.” Maya gave a nod and looked even more depress than before. “One last question, did you have any connection with the mass murder that happened during the 29th of February?” The inspector asked Maya with a calm and serious tone.

Maya was surprise and disgusted of the question the inspector had asked. “No. I didn’t have any connection at all to the mass murder that happen that day. In any case at all why should I do that? My mother and father were killed, my sister is traumatized and my old friends are dead. I didn’t have time to ask for their forgiveness.” Tears fell down from Maya’s eyes while she said all that to the inspector. She never thought she would be a suspect of the murder of her own mother and father.

“I am extremely sorry but I had to ask. Since this is one of my jobs as the inspector and to me right now almost everyone who was there before, during and after the murder are suspects.” The inspector explained the reason and stopped asking because he knew what he needed, for now.

“It’s okay.” Maya wiped her tears and looked at her sister, remembering the promise she made with her. She thought in her mind “I’ll never break that promise like in the past. I can’t stand seeing her suffer so much.”

After 3 hours went away Maya fell a sleep by her sister side. The inspector stayed awake by bringing a book and being too worried to sleep. Someone knocked the door, the inspector opened to see Adeline. “Adeline.” Adeline gave a nod and asked for permission to come in. The inspector lets her in. “I’m going to visit Jake while I do that, you should take care of them.”

Adeline gave a nod and asked “Have the doctor came to check her condition?”

“Yes he had but he seems as if he wasn’t to happy of what had happen.” The inspector looked to the side as he felt bad for her situation, Adeline also gave the same reaction. The inspector went out of the room. Maya woke up and gave a smile to Adeline. She rubbed her eyes and went to the bathroom to wash her face. The girl waked up suddenly looking pale and terrified.

“Where’s Maya?” She asked franticly, looking around the room. Adeline sat by her side and tried to comfort her.

“She went to wash her face in the bathroom. There’s nothing to worry about she’ll be fine.” Adeline massaged the girls back softly. “She’ll come back soon.” Adeline held her hand. The girl leaned on her shoulder. Maya walked in and quickly went to her sister side. Adeline let’s go of the girl and back away giving Maya space with her sister. Maya wiped away the sweat on the girl’s face with a small towel she brought in her handbag. The girl smiled sweetly feeling relief seeing her sister was safe and still there. Maya held her close and tried her best to make her sister feel comfortable.

In Jake’s room

Jake was busy finding more information in his laptop when the inspector came in. “Hello inspector.” Jake greeted politely.

“Hi Jake.” The inspector took a chair and sat down. “How are you doing?” The inspector sounded a bit concerned.

Jake smiled and answered with a “Well I’m alive luckily the bullet didn’t kill me.”

“That’s good to hear but don’t you think it’s a bit peculiar that you got shot in the stomach rather than straight to the head.” The inspector leaned back on the chair. Jake frowned when he thought of it again.

“Yeah I thought it was weird too. A professional sniper could have easily shot me on the head rather than to my stomach. It seems as if it was done purposely. It could’ve been to give a warning to us or the girl.” James looked angry and sickened of it.

“Maybe but we couldn’t be too sure since there is no evidence to back it up. We don’t have the sniper since he killed himself.” James looked shock. “Didn’t Adeline tell you?” The inspector wondered why Adeline didn’t tell Jake what happen.

“No. I haven’t seen her at all ever since I woke up. She didn’t come at all. I thought it was because she was too busy taking care of Maya and the girl. She didn’t even tell me or even gave me a call.” Jake didn’t believe his own partner could do this to him. The inspector was wondering why too but it was not as important as breaking the case.

“What happened before you got shot?” The inspector changed the subject back to the case.

“A nurse came in with the girls medicine and she bringing a letter. After the nurse left, Maya came out the door soon after. Maya told us her sister asked her to go out of the room. That moment all three us had a bad feeling and burst into the door. When we came in we saw the girl hysterically asking for something to stop. I saw a white paper with something written on it. It looked like it was written by blood so I picked it up then I got shot. The girl wanted to stop me but by that time I was already shot and lying on the floor.” Jake showed the place he got shot to the inspector.

“Thanks for the information. I got to leave now. Get some rest and have a good night’s sleep.
We need you to be back on your feet as soon as possible.” The inspector ruffled Jakes hair and walked towards the door.

Just when he was in front of the door Jake said “Bye dad.” The inspector made a small smile and opened the door, going out of the room.

The next day, in the morning Maya wasn’t there in the room because she needed to get some clothes for her and her sister to wear. The girl was being taken care by Adeline until Maya comes back. Adeline was busy investigating on the murder and finding out the person who shot Jake. The girl was bored since she already ate her breakfast and there is nothing else she could do. She called for a nurse to help her get on the wheelchair so that she could move. The nurse wanted to help her move but she wanted to do it by herself, not wanting to trouble any one. She slowly got the hang of it and went out to the garden that the hospital had. She was enjoying the nice shade under the willow tree while she watched little kids playing at playground. Jake saw her and walked towards her. Jake touch her shoulder and she flitch.

“Who’s that?” She turned around to see Jake. Jake gave a smile and she relaxes. “Oh…it’s you Jake.” She put her hand on her chest and exhales feeling relief.

“Hi. How are you doing?” Jake asked sitting on the garden bench next to her wheelchair.

“Well I am feeling much better than yesterday.” The girl looked at the children and gave a small smile. Then she looked Jake and asked “How about you? It’s not very common to see people taking a walk just a day after a surgery.” She asked with a mocking tone. Jake didn’t feel angry at all it is true that not many people do that but he just had to do something rather than sit in his room.

“Yeah that’s true but you don’t have to worry.” The girl looked as if confuse at what he said. “I know you’re actually worried of me.”  The girl looked away and Jake smiled.

“I’m sorry.” The girl was looking down at her feet, not smiling or frowning. Jake saw it and felt a bit guilty for teasing her. “If all of this never happened you wouldn’t have gotten shot, Adeline and Maya wouldn’t have been so tired having to take care of me. I’m such a troublesome person aren’t I?” Tears escaped from her eyes as she puts all the faults on herself.

“It’s not your fault. You didn’t plan for this to happen. You can’t stop something that is destine to happen from happening. In everything bad that happens there always a good thing in it just like the proverb every cloud has a silver lining. It’s just that you have to find it for yourself.” Jake lean his back on the bench and took a glance of the girl.

The girl wiped the tears away and smiled at Jake. “Thanks for the motivation.”

“You’re welcome.” Jake answered.

Then a little boy came walking to the girl bringing a flower. The boy gave it to her and said “Please don’t cry pretty lady.” The girl took it and gave a sweet smile to the little boy.

“I will and thank you. What’s your name little boy?” She patted him softly on the head and the boy gave her a cute smile.

“My name is Jake.” The girl and Jake snickered. “Did guys you laugh at my name?” The boy puffed out his cheeks in anger.

“No it’s not because of that. It’s just your name is the same with this man over here. His name is also Jake.” The girl explained smiling beautifully to the boy. The little boy blushed and looked at the man next to her.

“Is he your boyfriend?” The little boy asked the girl. Jake was shocked over the question and waited for the girl’s answer.

“Yes he is.” Jake was stunned of her answer. The boy looked a bit annoyed hearing that. Then the girl continued with “He is a friend and a boy so he is a boyfriend.” The girl said it innocently to the little boy. Jake sighed in relief and the little boy was cheering in joy. The girl watched the little boy feeling amused of his actions.

“Jake Thomson where are you?” A woman’s voice sounding worried.

“I’m here mom.” The little boy came running to her hugging her tightly. “Mommy I met someone with the same name as I do.” The woman smiled and gave a nod to her son. “He is just right over there with the pretty lady.” The little boy pointed at them. The woman looked their way and waved, smiling. Jake and the girl waved back.

“That was interesting.” Jake looked up to the sky. The girl wondered what he meant but it was interesting indeed.

“What’s so interesting?” The girl was softly touching the petals of the flower.

“That woman, she resembled my mother when she was alive. It looked like me from the past.” Jake closed his eyes and remembered every single moment he had with his mother. The girl took a glance of Jake and knew how he felt.

“We should really get back to our rooms. I don’t want my sister to start worrying.” The girl wanted to change the subject. She slowly moved the wheelchair backwards and change courses. She was stopped by Jake.

“I should help take you back there. Anyway I need to know your new room if I am going to be back on duty.” The girl shakes her head a bit being dumbfound of his optimism.

In the girl’s room

“Long time no see Maya.” The person said smiling.

“Well the same goes to you.” Maya gave him a hug and he hugged back. “I’m happy you’re here. I hope your presence could help my sister to recover from the trauma.” Maya let go off him and sat on a chair. Maya asked him to join and sit down on the other chair.

“I hope I could help her too.” The guy looked around and saw no one but them in the room. “Where is she?” He asked sounding concern.

“A nurse said she went out to the garden to get some fresh air.” Maya looked at her watch. “She should be back soon.” Maya gave him a smile and asked “Anyway to pass the time, can you tell me the things that I missed these past few years. Well being her best friend and all, I thought you would know a lot.”

“Where should I start?” The guy looked around the room for an idea then an idea came to appear. “The first time….” Before he could say anything more the girl and Jake came in laughing with joy. Until the girl saw the guy, she froze in fear.

“Sis aren’t you happy to see your best friend?” Maya asked because she felt strange of her sister’s unusual reaction.

The guy walked to her and Jake. He bends down to her ear and whispered softly. “Act normal or someone’s going to pay for it dearly.” The guy stands up and gave a smile to Jake.

The girl was shivering for a while, Jake felt something wasn’t right. “Are you alright?” Jake wanted to look at her but he was hesitant to do so.

In the snap of the finger she stopped shivering and looked back at him with a reassuring smile. “I’m alright. Why do you ask?” Jake took a step back being too surprise of her sudden change of emotion. Jake shakes his head and looked at the girl. For some reason he didn’t believe in the smile she gave him.

“Thanks for bringing her here” The guy took the handle of the girl’s wheel chair ignoring Jake. Jake let go of the wheel chair and let the guy push her into the room. He turned his face to face Jake and asked “Don’t you want to come in for a while?”

“No, not really I have other things to do.” Jake said that because he felt uneasy and didn’t want any trouble. “Anyway good bye and remember give that flower enough water.” Jake smiled and walked away.

“I will.” The girl whispered and had a small smile on her face.

“Good bye Jake, thanks for taking care of her.” Maya waved to him and walked to her sister. “Beside that where’s the flower? I’ll help you put it in a vase and give it water.” The girl gave the flower to Maya. “It’s a Calla Lily. Do you know that the flower gives a meaning of a majestic beauty?” Maya was smirking at her sister. The girl didn’t really get what Maya meant by it.

Suddenly the guy intrudes and said “But sadly it also can be a dangerous flower if ingested. The calla lily contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause intense burning and irritation to the mouth, lips and tongue. It can also cause vomiting and difficulty swallowing.” Maya and the girl looked at him with a surprise expression. “I’m sorry to ruin the mood but I got carried away when it comes to flowers.” The guy bowed his head in shame while he gave a weak laugh.

“It’s okay.” Maya gave him a smile and walked to her traveling bag. She took out a box and opened it, bringing out a clear vase. ‘Luckily I bought this just on my way back.” She fills it up with water and drops in a few quarters. She put in the Calla Lily and she was done. “Where should I put it sis?” The girl looked around the room and pointed at the drawers next to her bed. Maya agreed with her and put it there. “I wonder why the flower also means purity and birth. Can you tell me why?” Maya looked at the guy. He looked around for anyone else but he knew it was him and sighed. He told the story to Maya and she heard it the whole way. She felt it was interesting and started to ask about other flowers. The girl sat on her bed and looked at the lily. It was beautiful indeed but when she heard that it was quite dangerous, she wasn’t sure if it was worth the trouble to grow it. The girl however smiled remembering how she got it in the first place. She tried to forget about the guy who she thought was her best friend but killed her mother and father not including the others that were there. She had to act as normal as she could or not someone else would pay the price.

Before lunch time

“Sorry but I have to leave. I don’t want to worry my parents.” The guy was just in front of the door.

“It’s alright.” Maya gave him a smile. “Maybe next time you can come to visit us at my house and tell us more stories.”

“Sure, next time I’ll tell you more.” The guy gave a charming smile to Maya and the girl. The girl was happy that he was leaving but she had to show a sad face. “Maya can I talk to her for a while privately?” Maya gave a nod and left the room immediately.

“Why are you here?” It was the first question that came through her mouth spitefully.

“You should really control your tone. You don’t want your sister to misunderstand. Besides that I’m here to make sure of something.” The guy smirked at the girl. She was sickened of his presence and moved the wheelchair back.

“Since you’re here, take this along with you.” The girl shoved the letter to him. The guy took it and gave a smug smile. “I don’t need another warning. I remembered the first one quite clearly. You didn’t have to shoot Jake and ask one of your men to kill himself.” The girl looked as if she was at the edge of crying.

“Okay I get it. I’ll leave you alone but I still have to act as if I’m your best friend so get use to it. Just remember say a word to anyone what happened that day I promise you someone will die in your place every time.” The guy walked to the door and opened it. He smiled to Maya and left saying good bye to them.

“What did you guys talk about?” Maya asked feeling excited and giddy. The girl moved her wheelchair to her bed. She climb on to her bed and sat facing Maya.

“Nothing really just some stuff about school.” The girl shrugged her shoulders and smiled at Maya.

Maya wasn’t satisfied of her answer “Oh really then if that’s true why did he have to talk with you privately.” Maya crossed her hand in front of her chest and raised an eyebrow. The girl wasn’t really in the mood so she just shrugged her shoulders again and lied on the bed. “Why are you so gloomy? Do you miss him already?” Maya tried to tease her sister.

“Miss who?” The girl sat up and glared at her sister. Maya ignored the glare and started pretending as if she couldn’t hear. The girl climb on to her wheelchair and went out of the room, not telling Maya where she was going. She just replied “I just have something to do. I promise I won’t be long.” Maya tried to follow her but she forced Maya stay.

Chapter 1

“Years ago there was a suicide. A woman stabbed herself in the stomach rather than straight into the heart to punish herself for the sins she had committed. Although the pain was horrid, she didn’t scream because she wanted no one to save her. You must be wondering, what caused it.” The storyteller looked at everyone waiting for a response. Most of them had closed their ears not wanting to listen anymore. Some were nodding their head curios of what was about to happen.

“The sin that she had committed was causing the death of her whole family over one simple mistake. She could never forgive herself. Every single day that she lived, the memories haunted her. The day when it all happened was during her 16th birthday on the 29th of February. She was so happy that finally her birthday came after waiting for 4 years to past. Everyone there was smiling with joy in their eyes and laughter filled the mansion when the comedian made jokes on the stage. It was raining outside but inside the hall was filled with joy.

It was all wonderful until a group of gangster with guns broke in. Bullets were shot and everyone ran in fear. Her mother got hit by a bullet and fell to the floor. Other people were shot too. Blood covered the floor and laughter that filled the room before had changed into screams of pain. She crawled to her mother even though her legs were bleeding. She held her mother’s hand and begged her to stay alive.

With the last inch of strength, her mother said “I love you dear and please take care of yourself. Good bye.” Her mother smiled as she took her last breath and closed her eyes. She called out her mothers name but there was no reply. Her mother’s hand felt lifeless and cold. She cried and cried. She didn’t even notice that someone was pointing a gun to her head.

“Just kill me.” She said but the man only stood there, staring at her. “You already murdered my family and my friends. Why don’t you just kill me now?” She looked back and saw her best friend, the one that she trusted with everything. “Why?” She looked at him with a confuse face. However no response was given. She looked up and saw her friends eyes filled with nothing but darkness.

“Aren’t you going to answer me or why don’t you just kill me?” She yelled it to him since she couldn’t do anything else. Her hands were red from the blood of her mother and hers. Her face also had blood splattered on her face. She stared at him.

“No. I’m not going to kill you. Because now everyday you live, you will think of me and you will remember it’s your entire fault. The day when you couldn’t do anything to save the people you care about. Remember if you say or breathe a word of what happened today, one more life will be killed in your place.” He shot a man on the chest and that man screamed in pain. “See…” He looked back at me with no facial expression.

“Why?” She just stared at him. “Why do you need to do this to me? We were friends and I trusted you. You were kind and considerate. You wouldn’t even hurt a fly. Who are you? You’re not the person I’ve met before.” Then something came into her mind. She looked down, away from his face and closed her eyes shut tight making tears fall out. “Is it because of money?” She gripped her hands tight and punched it to the floor.

“If it was a part of it would it make any difference?” He put his gun away and said it with no sense of guilt.

“I knew it...” Someone hit her head from the back and made her faint.

“Do you want to bring her along? Since she’s quite a beauty and if we sell her off we might get a good pay out of it, or we could just kill her?” A man asked him while he looked at the girl.

“Leave her. The cops will be here soon. Let’s get what we want and leave.” He sternly said and called out everyone to leave. The man obliged what his boss said and followed him.

After 20 minutes the policemen arrived. When they walked in all they could see was blood on the floor and on the walls, dead bodies of people lying flat on the ground and cases of bullets. They put on their gloves and started to look for any survivor. A teenager came running into the scene and ran towards a girl. They tried to pull the girl away from the teenager. She eventually lets the girl go and was brought out of the mansion. They checked if she was still alive, blood was still oozing out of her legs and her heart rate was very weak. She was quickly brought into the ambulance and driven to the hospital.

At the police station

“Who are you? What is your connection to this girl?” The policeman asked looking at the suspicious girl. The girl wiped her tears.

“I am Maya Marissa Mathew. I was a part of the Mathew family until…my ex-father disowned me. I am the sister of that girl. I was supposed to wish my sister a “Happy Birthday.” ” Maya broke down and cried. A policeman tried to calm her down. “It’s okay.” Maya wiped the tears away. “What had happened? Did anyone else survive?” Maya looked at the policeman.

“No, only your sister survived but she might not be able to recover from the shock. We all believe it was a robbery because all the valuable items were stolen. But we are not completely sure who planned it.” The policeman looked at her with compassion.

She asked putting her head on her arm. “Can see her?”

“Yes. Except you could only meet her after we are completely sure of your identity.” The policemen went out and finished their jobs while Maya cried till she couldn’t cry anymore.

At the hospital

“How is the girl doing?” The inspector asked the doctor. He flipped through the results and looked neither happy nor sad.

“She’s stable right now but please don’t disturb her. The operation was a success. Luckily none of the bullets hit any vital vein. The bullets in her legs were taken out and now her legs are healing. She will not be able to walk until then. She will also be given pain killers for the pain. Have you found any family members that could take care of her until then?” The doctor looked at the inspector with a sad look on his face.

“Yes my colleague called and he told me that they had a girl named Maya Marissa Mathew who claimed to be this girl’s sister.” The inspector puts his hands in his pocket and looked solemnly at the girl who had no one but a sister that could also be an imposter. “Until she wakes up I will pay all of her bills.” He said to the doctor while he looked down to the floor.

“You don’t have to. Someone else had already paid all of her bills and that someone even bought a wheelchair for her to use until her legs recover.” The doctor walked towards the door and pushed it.

“Who did that?” The inspector asked curiously and confused. He quickly turned his face to see the doctor.

“The man was John Thomson. He said he was an acquaintance of the girl and paid the bills. After that he left. Anyway I have to leave now, I have another patient on hold.” The doctor answered, took a glance of the girl and left the room. The inspector called his co-worker to check the background of the man named John Thomson and for them to assign two policemen to take care of her. He pulled a chair and sat next to the girl. He asked “Why were you the only who survived little girl?” He looked at the girl wondering whether it was a good luck or a curse that she had to live with.

The next day the girl woke up. She looked around and saw a white ceiling and a window on her right side. She knew what she had dreamt was real but she wanted it to just be a nightmare. She sat up and saw two strangers sleeping on the chairs. “Who are you? Where am I?” She asked to the two strangers. They quickly woke up and had a surprise look on their faces. They walked to her and the woman sat on the small corner of her bed

“You’re in a hospital and we have been assigned by our police officer to take care of you. I am Adeline and he is Jake.” The woman said it softly to her. Adeline was afraid that the girl would freak out from all that was going on.

“That means that what I have dreamt about is real.” She stopped talking and became silent for a while. “Can you guys, please leave for a while?” They were about to shake their heads but she stopped them by saying. “Don’t worry I won’t do anything stupid. I just need some time alone. If it would make you happy, you can take all the sharp objects out of the room.” She smiled weakly at them as she tried to hold back the tears in her eyes. They nodded their heads and took all the sharp items, then left the room.

When they were finally out of the room, she looked at the window and saw families smiling with joy while holding each others hands. The tears in her eyes started to flow out. She didn’t make a single sound. She didn’t want anyone to know the pain she was feeling inside. Both Adeline and Jake knew the girl was crying but all they could do was just wait until she stopped. They bowed their heads in sympathy.

After 20 minutes

Jake knocked the door and said “You have a visitor. It’s your sister.”

“You can let her in.” She said it wiping the tears on her face. She stared out of window not even taking a glance of Maya. Maya came in smiling and yet there was sympathy in her eyes. “Why did you come back?” She hugged herself, still not even taking a simple glance of Maya.

“That’s not the way you should talk to your own sister.” Maya put the basket of fruits on the drawers next to the bed.

“No but you’re not my sister ever since you left that day. You never even tried to come see me in any way. You have left us but now you are back. What’s the catch?” Her eyes were filled with anger toward her sister.

“I came here to wish you a “Happy Birthday” but when I arrived I saw police cars and tons of policemen. I panicked and ran inside to see you lying there with blood covering your body. I was afraid I lost you.” A tear escaped Maya’s eyes and she wiped it away. The girl hugged herself tighter because she felt cold inside.

“I was the troublesome kid but you would always try to help me. You were there when mom and dad didn’t care but I didn’t want to burden you anymore. I also had enough of everything, I wanted to feel loved. Luckily I did but I didn’t have my family to enjoy it with. I got married and it’s with a good man.” Maya walked closer towards the girl. “Can you please look at me sis? I’m sorry for what I did but I won’t regret it. I love this man and I wouldn’t exchange anything for the love I have for him.”  Maya looked at the ring on her finger and smiled sweetly. The girl turned her face towards Maya and saw the smile she made. A small piece of her heart accepted the marriage but the other wanted her sister to stay the same like old times.

“What makes you think he is a good man?” The girl faced her and looked at her straight into the eyes. Maya took a chair and sat on it. Maya held her hands together, putting them on her lap and smiled at the girl.

“Well he is just like you. He would always take care of me and make sure I’m safe. Not like the other men I met before. You know what’s funny, he scolded me when I smoked or drank alcohol, and it was like you were him. At the end I stopped all the bad habits I had before. He was the one who asked me to go and see you on your birthday. He wanted me to reunite with my family again and be happy. He even promises to work hard on getting the blessing of my parents. But I guess that won’t be able happen now.” The smile on Maya’s face turned into a frown. She looked at her hands and tears fell. The girl let go of herself and hugged Maya.

“Maya please don’t cry. Mom and dad forgave you long ago. All they wanted was just for you to come back home. They are in a better place now so we better not make them feel sad or worried anymore. I forgave you too but I was angry. It took you such a long time to notice. The good thing is that you’re back safe and sound.” The girl said it softly to Maya and it sounded as if the anger and pain had disappeared from her heart.

“Little sis what happened? What killed our parents?” Maya muffled it out while she still sobbed on the girl’s chest. Before the girl could even answer a nurse came in with her medicine and an envelope. Then the nurse passed them to her and told that a man gave it to her, saying it was urgent that the girl in room 1312 to receive the letter. The girl curiously opened it and saw there was a letter inside with a locket. The locket her parents gave her before the party started. She picked up the locket and pressed the emerald on it. The locket opened. There was a picture of her mom and dad on one side and a picture of her and Maya on the other. She knew who gave it and asked Maya to go outside for a while. Maya was reluctant to leave at first but when she saw the look on her sister’s face she knew it was serious and left.

The girl took out the letter and opened it slowly. The words were written in blood, “If you tell another living soul a life shall be taken as payment for yours.” Her hands were shaking and the letter fell down. The memories came flashing back through her mind. Her hands were put on her ears as she tried to make the sound of bullets being shot and the sound of people screaming in pain, disappear. She trembled in fear remembering the horrible memory once more. She closed her eyes tight and begged for it to stop.

Maya, Adeline and Jake felt something was wrong and burst into the room. They saw the girl hysterically begging for something to stop. Maya and Adeline quickly ran towards the girl and tried to calm her down. Jake saw the paper and took it. The girl snapped back when she saw it and yell don’t but it was too late. Jake got shot on the stomach and fell on the floor. Adeline looked out the window and saw a person on the roof. Adeline rushed to Jake’s side and pressed to wound to stop it from bleeding.

“Go! Find the person now before he gets away.” Jake pushed her away; Adeline was hesitant on leaving him. “I’ll be fine.” Jake tried to reassure her. She dashed out of there to chase the person. She held her gun close to her. When she held the gun Jake’s blood dripped on it. It fueled her to run faster and catch the man who did it. While Adeline was running up the stairs, doctors rushed in and took Jake away. The girl was quivering in fear and Maya tried to calm her down. The girl pushed Maya away and she crawled off the bed. Maya wanted to help but the girl stopped her. She didn’t want anymore blood to be spilled. She took the letter and kept it in her pocket. After that she told Maya to keep it a secret from the police.

“No! I’m not keeping this a secret if that would lead to who killed our parents. I’m sorry.” Maya wanted to run out of the room but the girl held on her legs and pleaded her not to.

“Maya please don’t, it wouldn’t lead anywhere only more lives would be killed. I already have enough on my shoulder.” The girl held on Maya leg tightly. “I already lost mom and dad. I don’t want to lose a sister too.” Maya stopped struggling and thought of the pain her sister had to endure everyday. Maya went down to her knees and pulled the girl to herself, giving her a hug. She promised the girl she would keep it a secret until the day she died. The girl hugged Maya back still shivering in fear.

Adeline arrived there and saw the person. She told him to push his shot gun away and raise both of his hands up but the sniper looked back at her smiling. The sniper had a gun in his hands and pointed it to his head. Adeline told him to stop but the sniper said “Finally I’m going to be free.” Adeline sprinted to stop him but it was too late. The sniper already pulled the trigger. Blood and bits of brain came splattered out the other side. The sniper was dead and Adeline called the police station. She reported the incident and the police station sent the investigators. Adeline waited there. Suddenly an old lady came in through the door. Adeline was wondering who it was.

“Sorry ma’am you’re not allowed to be here.” Adeline said politely to the elderly woman.

“I’m sorry but have you seen my son? He always comes up here for some fresh air.” The aged woman looked around and saw the body behind Adeline. She became shock and put her hand to her mouth. The woman’s eyes were filled with tears.

“What is it ma’am?” The elderly woman pointed to the dead body and Adeline looked back. “Is he your son?” Adeline was shocked but no one could see it since she was too tired. The woman nodded and tears fell from her eyes. “Please don’t cry ma’am.” Adeline walked towards the woman, trying to comfort her.

“Christopher…” The woman sobbed and Adeline watched feeling miserable for not being able to do anything. Jake was in surgery fighting for his life. The girl was just trying to keep people from dying in her place while Maya was torn between the need to find the killer of her parents and to keep her sisters secret. Everyone was tied in a knot that they can’t untie themselves.

The girl was carried back onto the bed and given sleeping pills. Maya sat beside her stroking her hair away from her face. Someone knocked the door and walk into the room. It was Adeline. “How’s Jake?” Maya looked at her tired and worried.

“He survived the surgery but he is still in critical stage. He still hasn’t woken up.” Adeline sat on a chair. She puts her head to her hands feeling frustrated and tired. Maya was also tired but she couldn’t leave her sister alone.

“Adeline, you should go home and take some time to rest.” Maya suggested it to her hoping she would agree. Adeline was going to decline her offer but it was stopped when, Maya continued with “Anyway the inspector is coming to visit her soon. We are also going to change the room to another as soon as possible. If you want you can help us transfer her to another room then you could leave.” Maya sounded very calm and conserve even though she is emotionally exhausted.

“Sure that would help me from worrying too much.” Adeline gave a weak smile and accepted Maya suggestion. Maya smiled back at Adeline and continued taking care of her sister.
